CARVED BLACKWOOD CHAIR
DESIGNER: Unknown
MATERIAL: Indian rosewood (shisham) with a cushioned seat
STYLISTIC INFLUENCE: Regional

STRUCTURAL FEATURES: The British start commissioning the production of furniture to local carpenters and craftspeople during the late-19th century. The designs, provided by the British themselves, are then used as prototypes by the craftspeople to carve new furniture. Besides the British, Bombay Blackwood furniture is largely patronised by wealthy Parsi families living in spacious homes in the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, required to house the bulky, ornate furniture.

STYLISTIC FEATURES: The intricately pierced and carved frame is rich with decorative elements such as vine scrolls and foliage.
